Uganda emerged victorious in the U17 AFCON CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers 2024, defeating Tanzania 2-1 in a thrilling final. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Tanzania’s Abel Josiah Samson opening the scoring in the first half, giving his side a 1-0 lead at halftime. However, Uganda’s tactical adjustments in the second half set the stage for an unforgettable comeback.
A substitution in the 57th minute, which saw Enock Bagenda replace Richard Okello, provided the boost Uganda needed. Arafat Nkoola leveled the score in the 63rd minute, breathing new life into the Ugandan side. As the clock ticked toward full-time, James Bogere stepped up in the 88th minute to score the decisive goal, cementing Uganda’s status as regional champions.
James Bogere’s performance was instrumental throughout the tournament. In just four games, he netted seven goals, earning the title of tournament top scorer and further showcasing his prodigious talent. Abubakari Walusimbi, another standout, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), reflecting Uganda’s dominance on both individual and team levels.
