Uganda hosts CAF safe stadium workshop ahead of CHAN 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Safe Stadium Workshop, aimed at preparing Uganda for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), concludes today at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The three-day event, which began on Tuesday, November 19, is part of efforts to standardize safety and security protocols across CAF member associations.

Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, will jointly host CHAN 2024 in February. The workshop brought together 40 participants, including representatives from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), StarTimes Uganda Premier League clubs, local security agencies, and stadium management teams.

Key Facilitators and Objectives

The workshop was led by a team of CAF and FIFA safety and security experts, including:

Dr. Christian Emeruwa, CAF Head of Safety and Security

Ababacar Sene, CAF Security Department

Khakame Alan Chikanimr, CAF Safety and Security Instructor

Katharina Steinberg, FIFA Safety and Security Event Operations Specialist

The initiative is focused on enhancing safety and security standards for football events in Africa. Speaking at the opening, Dr. Emeruwa emphasized the need for a unified approach:

“The idea is to change how we do things in Africa. We’ve improved competitions, and now we’re focusing on safety and security. We want to ensure a consistent experience for fans, whether they are in the stadium or watching on TV.”

Dr. Emeruwa also announced plans for follow-up online training sessions with CAF and FIFA, culminating in certification for participants.

FUFA’s Commitment to Excellence

FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson, who inaugurated the workshop, reiterated Uganda’s dedication to football development both on and off the pitch.

“As a country, we aim to be first in everything we do, both on the field and in the administrative aspects of football,” said Watson.

Uganda is the 13th country to host this CAF training, underscoring its commitment to fostering a safe and secure environment for football fans and stakeholders
