Greenlight Islamic School emerged as champions of the inaugural USSSA Nansana Zonal Schools Weekend League.

The league, which featured nine schools from the Nansana zone, kicked off in June with the goal of maintaining players’ fitness throughout the year.

With a primary focus on keeping sports vibrant in secondary schools and fostering talent development, the teams exceeded expectations, delivering consistent action over the 140 days since its commencement on June 29, 2024.

Justus Mugisha, the USSSA president, praised the efforts of the Nansana Sub-zone Chairman for successfully mobilizing and organizing the league. He remarked that this initiative would set a strong precedent for other zones, encouraging them to adopt similar programs.

“This league has created a valuable platform for students to develop their skills, foster teamwork, and showcase their talents. It is crucial for our students to remain strong and prepared for championships throughout the year,” Mugisha stated.

Weekend leagues also serve as an avenue for capacity building, allowing referees to hone their skills. Those who officiated the games were recognized and rewarded by the USSSA president for their contribution to the league’s success.

Greenlight Islamic School dominated the league table, finishing with 21 points from seven matches.

The championship climaxed on Sunday at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso, where organizers launched the new edition with an elite one-day tournament featuring four teams: Greenlight Islamic School, London College Nansana, Oxford High School, and Highfield.

In a thrilling final, London College Nansana edged out Greenlight with a 3-2 victory to claim the tournament championship.
