Executive Director Bazeki Delivered as Special Boxing Day Gift to Kampala

On a sweltering morning in Kampala, Hajat Sharifah Buzeki stepped into her new role as Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). Her appointment follows the tragic Kiteezi landfill collapse that claimed over 30 lives, leading to the dismissal of her predecessors. Buzeki, alongside her deputy Benon Kigenyi, now faces the task of restoring public trust and rebuilding the city’s governance in the wake of this disaster.

Buzeki brings a wealth of experience to the role, including a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Management from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU). Previously, she served as the Commissioner of Human Resource Management at the Ministry of Public Service, where she developed crucial skills in organizational management, policy implementation, and institutional transparency.

Her time at the Ministry of Public Service provided her with a deep understanding of public-sector challenges and reform, which she now aims to apply to KCCA. Buzeki’s leadership in promoting fiscal accountability, managing large-scale projects, and navigating complex institutional dynamics will be pivotal as she works to tackle the issues of waste management, infrastructure, and regulatory oversight in Kampala.

Socially and politically, Buzeki faces a volatile environment. The Kiteezi tragedy exposed deep cracks in city governance, and her leadership will be closely scrutinized by both the public and political factions. She must rebuild trust with the residents of Kampala, many of whom are wary of the city’s governance. Additionally, her ability to forge political alliances will be crucial in navigating Kampala’s complex political landscape.

With her extensive background in public administration, Buzeki’s leadership will be tested on whether she can deliver transparent and efficient services while addressing the city’s most pressing challenges. As she embarks on this difficult journey, all eyes are on her to see if she can turn past failures into the foundation for a better future for Kampala.
